SURFING

The point is formed by a rock bottom river mouth. It’s kind of a stubby point which allows you to get lefts and rights. The longest wave in Mizata (50 - 100 yards) can be found at the right in front of the river mouth. The second longest wave can be found at the left of the point going towards the beach break.  These waves can be anywhere from mushy to hollow. You may also find waves in the middle indention of the point but be careful of being closed out onto the rocks. Intermediate level. Paddling out can be challenging.

The Beach Break is mostly sand except for Boulder. There are 3 different places you can surf on the beach break. There is Boulder (the left side of the beach from the lodge), Antenna (the middle) and Don Miguel’s (the right side of the beach). Beginner level.

Boulder – as the point starts to converge into beach in front of the lodge you will find a left beach break identified by a huge round boulder sticking out of the ocean floor. The boulder can be seen during low tide only. It creates a boil on the surface of the water. Mainly mushy but can get hollow.

Antenna – just to the right side (from the water) of the red and white radio antenna in the middle of the beach you will find the most fun and hollow wave in Mizata. It is produced by a pretty reliable sand bar. This is an A-frame that works best from 3 – 6 feet. You can find yourself getting barreled on top of 3 – 4 feet of water, very shallow. Many boards have been broken here.
Don Miguel’s – is a right beach break located in front of the last house/shack on the beach going towards the Slab. This is the smallest and shortest ridable wave that can be found on the beach. It is great for beginners and it is fun since it also gets hollow.

The Slab is the most challenging and most rewarding wave in Mizata. When it’s firing nothing else beats the Slab at this beach. The line starts off on the slab and ends on sand. Works best at 5 – 8 feet. It’s a short wave but hollow and packed with adrenaline. Be careful of riptides, closeouts and being caught on the inside. Advanced to Kamikaze level. There are virtually three places you can surf at in Mizata.

Each place is unique and different from the others. The beach stretches roughly a quarter mile from Point to Slab.

Weather:

Water Temperature: 80 - 85 degrees Fahrenheit year round. Air Temperature: 75 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit year round.

Seasons:

Winter or "rainy season" lasts from May - October. This is when the swell is consistently in the 5 - 7 foot range with periodic 8 - 12 foot swells. This winter (2006), Sunzal held up fine with a 20 foot swell pumping and was firing lines down to the shore but at the cost of a pretty gnarly rip-tide. Since most of the point breaks are formed by river mouths, there tends to be a lot of mud run-off into the ocean during this time of year. At the same time, the vegetation is at its most fluorescent and there is an abundance of delicious tropical fruits available. This season is recommended for intermediate and advanced surfers.

Summer or "dry season" lasts from November - April. This time of year the swell drops but never reaches flat proportions here in Mizata. It ranges from the 2 - 5 foot range with occasional 6 - 7 foot swells. There is little rain and the vegetation becomes dry and brown but the ocean becomes a clean and clear blue since the mud run-off stops. The summer brings a lot of ocean life to the shores. This includes a variety of fish, dolphins, sting-rays, sea turtles, sea urchins and jelly fish. There are small sharks in the vicinity but do not grow longer than 4 feet and I have never heard of a fatal shark attack here in El Salvador. During this time of season there is an abundance of small jelly fish that are more of a nuisance than life threatening. This season is perfect for beginners since the waves are more manageable and it is less crowded than in the winter.
