Mizata Surf Lodge began construction in March of 2005. It is the vision of Edgar and Ricardo Rivas. Edgar Rivas was born in Los Angeles, California and is first cousin to Ricardo Rivas born in San Salvador, El Salvador. Ricardo Rivas had been operating his surf tour guide business, Epic Surf Adventures, for little over a year when Edgar decided to move to El Salvador and invest in Mizata Surf Lodge. Epic Surf Adventures serves as Mizata Surf Lodge's primary tour guide operator which offers surf, cultural and city tours throughout El Salvador.
The search for a good spot to surf didn't prove too difficult. There were various beaches considered but after careful evaluation, Santa Maria de Mizata (which will be referred to as Mizata), was the most clear choice. It is situated on the coastline between two major cities, San Salvador and Sonsonate. It pertains to the world renowned surf department/state of La Libertad. Mizata has 3 types of places to surf. You can virtually paddle from one to the other scoring epic waves along the way. All three places are fun and unique. La Libertad is home to Punta Roca (Puerto de La Libertad), Sunzal, El Zonte and K59/61 which offers some of the best surf in Central America. La Libertad has been immortalized into surfing's community by having scenes from the cult classic "Big Wednesday" filmed here. Spyder Wills is holding up a Salvadorian national beer called "Suprema" which is still served here and is actually pretty good. Pupusas are the national food of El Salvador and are actually really good also. But maybe should be called poopusas according to the crew of Big Wednesday.
Another key reason why Mizata was chosen is because of its remoteness from the hustle and bustle of the beaches near the port which attracts a lot of weekend tourists. If you are looking for tranquility on your surf trip, then Mizata is the place for you. Mizata Surf Lodge being one of the only accommodations in the area, it is not rare to find yourself surfing the beach by yourself all day long. Having said that, I don’t know how much longer we will be able to keep that last sentence on this page. Mizata lies 45 kilometers (≈28 miles) along the main highway, CA2 “La Litoral”, west of Sunzal. It can be a long trek for tourists without a means of transportation or accommodations. Mizata Surf Lodge and its amenities are exclusively for clients only and are not open to the general public. |
